Successful Scoliosis Surgery and Rehabilitation

A 30-year-old woman with a severe scoliosis curve (75 degrees) initially required a spinal fusion from T3 to L3. After undergoing pre-operative rehabilitation, the extent of the surgery was able to be reduced. Following the procedure, she participated in a comprehensive post-operative rehabilitation program.

Case 1
Case 2

Patient: A 17-year-old female with a severe scoliosis curve, initially diagnosed with a Cobb angle of 83 degrees.

Original Surgical Plan: The patient was scheduled to undergo a spinal fusion including a anterior spinal fusion (ASF) to address the curvature in the front of the chest.

Pre-Operative Rehabilitation Program: The patient participated in a comprehensive pre-operative rehabilitation program at our centre. The program focused on:

  • Improving spinal flexibility: Exercises were designed to increase the range of motion in the thoracic and lumbar spine.

  • Strengthening muscles: Targeted exercises were performed to enhance core stability and support the spine.

  • Improving posture: Techniques were taught to help the patient maintain a more neutral spinal alignment.

Results: After several months of consistent rehabilitation, the patient's spinal mobility had improved significantly. Upon reevaluation, the surgeon determined that an posterior spinal fusion (PSF) alone would be sufficient to address the curvature, eliminating the need for the ASF.

With our expert's guidance and tailored exercises, the patient experienced significant pain reduction and a rapid recovery. She was able to return to work and resume her favorite activities, including swimming and traveling. The rehabilitation program focused on pain management, improving lung volume, strengthening her limbs and back to improve her overall functional ability.
